We recommend that educators introduce the problem context upfront. Through the problem-scoping activities, students should help in the identification of the kinds of background knowledge they need in order to address the problem. Students should engage in learning activities that provide that background, yet keep the engineering design challenge in mind as the context for their learning. When moving into the iterative stages of solution generation, students should use the background learning as well as results from their tests of their prototypes as evidence for their design decisions. The integration of the engineering with the background knowledge is imperative for the learning gains desired through implementing engineering in the classroom.
